JPG never even spent a single day in design school, but on the day of his 18th birthday, after mailing packages of his drawings to 27 different design firms, he was offered his first job at Pierre Cardin. After that, he worked for Jean Patou and then returned to Cardin before starting his own fashion company more than 40 years ago. His initial show featured unconventional (and affordable) materials like braided straw. Fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier hails from France. He began working for Pierre Cardin in 1970 as a design assistant. He is self-taught. In 1976, he presented his first solo exhibit. Gaultier is renowned for his gender-bending designs and streetwear-inspired ready-to-wear (he didn't start making couture until the 1990s). In his early career, he was frequently referred to as the enfant terrible of French fashion. Since 2003, Jean-Paul Gaultier has served as the creative director at Hermès in addition to creating for his own brands. Growing up, Jean Paul Gaultier (born in 1952) lived in the Paris suburb of Arcueil. We are informed that his grandma had a significant influence: Gaultier first learned about the power of clothing from Marie Garrabe, a "health counselor" who recommended her clients to dress better in order to enhance their lives.
