His initial show featured unconventional (and affordable) materials like braided straw. Fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier hails from France. He began working for Pierre Cardin in 1970 as a design assistant. He is self-taught. In 1976, he presented his first solo exhibit. Gaultier is renowned for his gender-bending designs and streetwear-inspired ready-to-wear (he didn't start making couture until the 1990s). In his early career, he was frequently referred to as the enfant terrible of French fashion. Since 2003, Jean-Paul Gaultier has served as the creative director at Hermès in addition to creating for his own brands.
